Resources

A Resource — a CI in the code — is the resource family. It is the largest family by far: 69 classes ship with a Perl definition, and any class created in the UI is also a resource.

Which spelling

A class either has a block keyword of its own or it does not. Getting it wrong is not a subtle failure: GitRepository "core" {} is HCL200 Unknown block type GitRepository, and resource "generic_server" "web01" {} is accepted but exports back as the short form.

Three rows in that table are not resources. The user and UserGroup classes have families of their own — see Roles, users and groups — and writing either as resource "user" "..." or resource "UserGroup" "..." is HCL214. The topic class likewise has a topic family. Note that the group CI class is a different thing from UserGroup and is an ordinary second-order resource: resource "group" "foo" {}.

Classes with no Perl file — anything defined through the UI or imported as a CI type — are second-order and open schema: every attribute is accepted, no attribute is warned about, and no defaults are elided because there are none declared. That is also why a typo in a closed-schema attribute is only a warning, HCL205 Attribute hostnmae is not declared by generic_server and will be stored as is — the alternative would reject legitimate legacy and plugin-added fields.

--lax silences HCL205 entirely, for files written by an installation with attributes this one has never heard of. Unknown blocks are still refused.

Reading the attribute tables

Every table below is derived from Clarive::HCL::Schema::attr_specs, which introspects the class's Moose metaclass. That is exactly what the encoder sees, so the tables cannot drift from the code the way a hand-maintained list would. To regenerate one, call attr_specs on the class name; there is no committed artefact to keep in step.

Attribute order inside a block is canonical and derives from the class, never from the stored document: name first, then plain configuration alphabetically, then references, then sensitive attributes. That is what makes two installations holding the same object produce byte-identical files.

Bookkeeping is never written, whatever the class declares:

A document field the class never declared is still written — dropping it would silently lose configuration — and its sensitivity is still checked, so a stray password column cannot slip out in the clear.

References

131 attributes across the shipped classes hold an address rather than a value. Writing a literal where one of these belongs is not always an error — many are typed Any on the class — but it will store a string where the rest of the product expects a mid.

A reference-typed attribute that is given a literal where the decoder enforces the distinction is HCL206 Attribute groups expects references, not a literal. Where it is not enforced, the value is stored as written and the plan shows it.

Sensitive attributes

24 declared attributes are sensitive, plus anything whose name matches password, passwd, pass, secret, token, api_key/apikey, private_key/privatekey, or ends in webhook_url.

The match is on the name, unanchored, so it catches more than credentials. token_case on the parser classes is a case-sensitive/case-insensitive switch, and private_key_location is a file path; both are treated as secrets because their names contain token and private_key. The practical effect is that they export as b64("...") and that omitting them from a file means "keep what is there" rather than "take the default".

Secrets on a resource follow --secret:

Variables

A project, project_template, nature or variable keeps the variables set in its Variables tab, one set per environment, under variables. "*" is the set that applies to every environment:

On a variable the environments hold the value itself: variables = { "*" = "foo", PROD = "bar" }.

The stash belongs to whoever set it, so it is written exactly as stored:

• Names and environments are not touched. A name that is not an HCL identifier ("*", "foo.bar") is quoted. An environment with nothing set is still listed.
• Values keep their type. "1.10" stays a string and is not turned into a number. A list stays a list.
• CI values are addresses. The value of a variable whose type is ci is written as the CI's address, like any reference, and read back as that CI in the target installation. Any other variable keeps its text, even text that looks like a CI id. Several CIs stored in one comma-separated string cannot be rewritten without changing what is stored, so they are kept as written and reported with HCL107.
• Nature overrides are keyed by the nature's address under _natures.

A variable whose type is password is a secret wherever it appears: in any environment and in any nature override. The same goes for every value of a variable whose var_type is password. It is decrypted and written under --secret like any other secret. The stored ciphertext is never written, because importing it would encrypt it a second time. With --secret omit, or when the stored value cannot be decrypted, the password is written as null. null on a password means keep the stored value; on any other variable it means no value. When the import declares the variable, its declared var_type decides which: a variable the files turn into a password keeps the value it had. A password left null where nothing is stored is left out of the stash, so that environment still inherits the value from *, the parent project or the variable's default.

The stash is saved whole, the way the Variables tab saves it: a variable or an environment left out of variables is removed. cla diff and cla import --diff show each password in a changed stash as (sensitive) and every other value as it is.

An import can bring what its stashes use along with them. A variable, a CI or a nature declared in the same files is written first, so a new password variable is known to be one, and is encrypted, before any project's value for it is stored. A CI variable or a nature override pointing at an object the import creates gets that object's new id. A variable declared as a password in the files is treated as one in the plan output even when the target does not have it yet.

When the files change a variable from a value to a password, or back, every stash in the import that uses it is written again, even where its values did not change: a value kept from the target is encrypted when the variable becomes a password and stored in the clear when it stops being one. Stashes the import does not include keep what they stored until their value is entered again; include them in the import to have them rewritten.

Objects that point at each other through their stashes are fine. The first of them is written before the other exists, so its stash is written again once both are there, with the other's id in place of its address.

Internal classes

Eighteen classes are runtime state rather than configuration: they exist in enormous numbers and mean nothing on another installation. They are excluded from export unless --internal is given, and a reference pointing at one is dropped with HCL103 Dropped a reference to GitRevision-92 because class GitRevision is internal.

topic is internal as a CI class and has its own topic family and its own export gate; it is not a resource.

Note that Baseliner::Role::CI::Internal is a different role and does not exclude anything from export — bl and status consume it and are exported normally.

External classes

A class that does not ship with Clarive is external. That means a class from a feature, one a plugin outside the core distribution creates, or one stored in the database with no code installed at all. cla export leaves external classes out unless:

• the class consumes the marker role Baseliner::Role::HCL::Exportable (in a plugin, roles: ['::HCL::Exportable'] in ci.createClass()),
• --external names it, or the feature or plugin it comes from, or
• --all-external is given.

A reference from an exported object to an external one is kept as an address, but the external object is not pulled in with it. Import is not affected: an external class in the files imports like any other. The whole story, with the summary it prints, is in cla export.

Defaults are omitted

A stored document holds every attribute the class declares. What is written is only what differs from the declared default.

That object also has active = 1, os = "unix", arch = "x86_64", connect_ssh = 1, remote_perl = "perl", remote_tar = "tar", proxy_timeout = "15", bl = "*" and the rest stored on it. None of them are written, because none of them differ from what the class table declares. connect_timeout = 60 is written because the declared default is 30, so 60 is a choice somebody made.

name is not written either: the label already carries it. It appears only when the real name does not slug to the label.

The omission is symmetric. On import, an attribute absent from the file is materialised back from the same table, so the block above describes an object identical to one that spelled all of it out.

Sensitive attributes are the exception in both directions: they are never elided as defaults, and absence means keep what is stored rather than "take the default".

The comparison is type-aware — a Mongo boolean object and a declared 1 are the same value — and only defaults that are cheap and pure to evaluate are used. A Bool, Num, Int, Str or Maybe[...] default declared as a closure is called; anything else is treated as having no default and is always written.

--all-attributes does not apply to resources

The flag reaches the encoder and is forwarded to the rule encoder, but the CI attribute path never consults it. cla export --all-attributes produces byte-identical output to cla export for every resource, role, user and group; it only changes rule operation parameters. The All attributes switch on the resource, role and group HCL tabs is likewise inert — the object encode endpoint does not accept the parameter at all.

This matters for the cases --all-attributes exists to serve. A compact file reads back identically only against the defaults table of the release that wrote it; if a class default changes between releases, an old file imports with the new default. For resources there is currently no way to ask for the self-contained form, so an archive or a cross-release move carries that risk.

--all-attributes does work as described for rules. There is a worked before/after example using the ship operation at the end of the cla export page, and the table behind it is documented in Rules.
